Brendan began as an aeronautical engineer at Imperial College, working with British Aerospace Military Aircraft (Typhoon) and Flint & Neill (bridges). He retrained as an Industrial Designer at the Royal College of Art, founding Aerial, a product design consultancy focusing on toys for the Japanese market.
By 2000, Brendan was developing interactive exhibits for the Science Museumβs Wellcome Wing, and collaborating on large mechanical sculptures for art galleries (Victoria Miro) & store atriums (Prada).

In 2003, Brendanβs passion for thrill led to writing The Taxonomy of Thrill, launched at Tate Modernβs User_Mode. This inspired him to create Thrill Laboratory and his role as the Thrill Engineer. He developed avant-garde ride installations (V&A), conducted public experiments (MoMA), and collaborated with brands like Nissan, Royal Caribbean, Disneyland, Ellaβs Kitchen, and Durex.

In 2006, Merlin Magic Making purchased 13 copies of The Taxonomy of Thrill for its Creative Directors, leading to Brendanβs role as a consultant. He specialises in developing future attractions and commercial opportunities. Brendan consulted on TV reality and gameshow formats (RDF Television), developing technology to monitor & broadcast on-screen emotions (many pilots)

In 2016, Nesta commissioned Brendan to produce βNeurosis: ride out of your mindβ with ridersβ neurological data generating VR content, simulator motion, music, and light show. Brendan distilled the success of this audacious ride into the simplicity of βswing+VRβ. He founded Studio Go Go to develop and license IP in this field, including patents & design/copyrights, preparing for large-scale global expansion.

Brendanβs passion for public engagement led to roles as a TV presenter (BBC, Channel 4) specialising in design & engineering, and as a regular contributing expert (go-to-guy for disasters). Brendan hosts events (Crafts Council, Global Design Forum), delivers keynotes (IAAPA, Mutek) and gives public lectures on the art & science of thrill (Royal Institution)

Brendan is currently Professor of Creative Industries at Middlesex University. He's held posts as Senior Research Fellow in Computer-Related Design & Deputy Head of Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art; and Principal Research Fellow in Computer Science at the University of Nottinghamβs Mixed Reality Laboratory.
